Zoom Painting with Wool: Dala Horse
June 6 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm CDT$80 – $90
Held in partnership with American Swedish Institute
Celebrate Sweden’s National Day (Sveriges Nationaldag) with a felting project of that oh-so-Swedish-symbol – the Dala horse! Students will explore the magic of needle felting to recreate the traditional painted horse on a flat base. To begin, students will learn how to stretch a felt backing onto an embroidery hoop, then use needle felting techniques to transform a beautiful array of hand dyed roving from the instructor’s own sheep into their own interpretation of the project’s basic design. Focus will be given to shape creation, colorwork to mimic folk painting technique, and three-dimensionality. At the end, the instructor will offer suggestions for using or mounting your finished piece. Bring your creative spirit and love of wool! Open to ages 12 and up.
This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.
Kits ($25 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes a prepared felt backing, needle felting needles, and ample wool. Students must also provide their own needle felting base or mat and an 8” inch embroidery hoop – these supplies can be ordered separately from the instructor (see bio link below), found online, or purchased locally from many yarn or textile shops. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute May 27-31 or June 2-6, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this kit-based class closes May 25.
